蒸汽、氧化剂和大部分新鲜原料烃在一个放热催化转化段中进行反应得到甲烷含量很低的第一段转化气来生产氨合成气。剩余的新鲜原料在吸热催化转化段与蒸汽反应得到低甲含量的第二段转化气。
